Overview

The STA’s uniquely structured horary course is designed for astrologers who already understand the basics of chart calculation and interpretation. You don’t need prior training in horary – we provide a complete introduction to its theory, with clear guidance on the most effective principles of judgement and how to apply them in practice.

The course shows how to interpret charts with confidence and clarity, and also how to prepare for the kind of sensitive issues that arise in horary practice. It carries a practitioner-level accreditation, and by the end of the course professional astrologers will be well prepared to include horary in their client services.

Twenty serialised sessions explore horary technique in depth – covering the theory and history of horary, while focussing most strongly on interpretation and engagement with issues that commonly arise in consultation. Our emphasis is on learning through real client scenarios, alongside fascinating historical examples. While rooted in traditional principles, the methodology we teach also draws on modern counselling insights to support the needs of contemporary horary practice. As part of this, we demonstrate a wide range of horary questions — from common client queries to more unusual or challenging examples.

Study groups in this course are carefully structured to ensure that each student receives plenty of personal attention. Every session includes written and interactive tutorials, assignment feedback, and opportunities for one-to-one clarification in addition to group discussion. The course builds steadily, at a digestible pace, designed to offer an accumulated knowledge of horary doctrines in a balanced and accessible way – so that theoretical understanding enhances and inspires (rather than overwhelms) the creative elements of horary interpretation.

Syllabus

The format of this course has been developed to maximise the advantages of an intensive attendance course supplemented by online tutorials. Twenty session themes are delivered over two consecutive weekends, using mainly live presentations, supplied course notes, and set assignments. Each student can revise their work at their own pace and in their own time, but always with easy access to guidance and support from the tutor, and with the benefit of supplementary study-group discussion.

A typical session will include a live presentation (only two sessions are pre-recorded); reading; workbook activities or additional example charts to help you prepare for the session assignment; an assignment which tests your understanding of the session’s main principles; and an answer key which provides extra follow-up material and more information on points you will have discovered through taking the assignment.

Your tutor delivers and guides the flow of course content, reviews student assignments, gives personalised feedback, and is always available for questions and feedback. We also encourage students to engage in group interaction through group discussion, both in live sessions and on the STA Course Portal general forum, which will become available for students one week before course commencement.

Venue

Live sessions will be held at Bond Collective, 276 Greenpoint Avenue (Flr 2), Brooklyn, NY. The space occupies a full floor of the historic Leviton factory building – a sun-filled, generously proportioned room where factory-scale windows and concrete floors carry the building's industrial character into a comfortable, wellappointed interior. We’ll work in a private conference room sized comfortably for our group.

The space includes a kitchen stocked with coffee, tea, and water throughout the day. Students are welcome to bring lunch – a refrigerator is available – with plenty of local options available for dining.

Bond Collective is located one block from the G train (Greenpoint Avenue stop) and a short walk from the NYC Ferry's Greenpoint Landing terminal, making it easily accessible from most parts of the city.

Policies, Requirements and Recommendations

  • Whilst previous experience of horary is not required, this course is designed to offer professional level training. It is not suitable for anyone inexperienced in casting charts or just beginning to gain an understanding of astrology. Participants must have a good, solid understanding of general astrological principles, including an easy familiarity with the main symbolic and theoretical principles of planets, signs, houses, aspects and transits (for more on this, see the last point below).
  • Participants must be at least 18 years old. Since horary deals with life-problems and emotional concerns, it has various ethical dilemmas and sensitivities attached to it, which need to be considered as part of our subject exploration. Some case studies touch on issues concerning emotional distress, violence, trauma or death. Anyone in a vulnerable or delicate emotional state, who may be negatively affected by exploring such issues, is advised to consider carefully before enrolling on this course.
  • This is an English language course, with over 400 pages of accompanying text notes, and over 35 hours of live, interactive instruction. Some course material will be delivered in pre-recorded format.
  • Students should expect to commit to approximately 10-12 hours to the study of this course outside of our live weekend delivery dates. Our qualifying certificate is only issued to students who demonstrate their study and understanding of the material by successfully completing our set assignments. (Students who fail to do this by the scheduled farewell date are allowed a 6-month period to revise or catch up with any missing assignments for an extra fee.)
  • Course materials are provided in a serialized form throughout the course as PDF downloads. Our textbooks, diagrams, and all materials used in the delivery of the course are strictly copyrighted and provided for personal study only – no element of them whatsoever may be reproduced or recirculated in any form. Some video tutorials will be assigned to you; they are not available for personal download and can only be accessed by logging in to our secure course portal. We allow graduates continued access to these videos and all other resources on the course portal for 12 months after the completion of the course, but do not continue to provide tutorial support, which ceases on the scheduled farewell date.
  • Most of the course materials will be delivered in printed binder format, but some elements will only become available after assignment submission via our course portal. Course files are accessible on all modern computers, but not all elements of the course assignments are guaranteed to be accessible through mobile phones or reduced-capacity tablets. With home access to a printer, students can complete their binder of course notes, course workbook, and answer key. For the final farewell session, students are required to use the free video conference program, Zoom, to enable interactive online sessions with tutors and fellow students (www.zoom.com).
  • One week prior to commencement of online study, students are required to read our Welcome Pack and watch a short video which shows how to enrol, access materials, navigate our teaching site and submit assignments. Students will also be expected to come to the course having completed their study of Session 1.
  • In the unlikely event that the course is cancelled or postponed, STA will refund all course fees but will not be liable for any other additional costs personally incurred by participants.
  • If a student pays for the course and then changes his or her mind for any reason, a cancellation will be arranged and the refund in the same form of payment is provided within 30 days of that payment. No refunds are allowed after these 30 days or after the delivery of any formal course material has commenced. Places on this course is strictly limited to 15 students; once the course is full we prevent further enrolments. Therefore, deposits paid to secure and hold a course placement are non-refundable and non-transferable after the 30-day ‘cooling off’ period has expired.
  • Places held by a deposit must be paid in full before the agreed deadline. If the full payment is not completed by the advertised deadline we reserve the right to offer the placement to someone else.
  • Chart calculation is not taught as part of this syllabus, except for techniques that are specific to horary (such as planetary hours and the calculation of planetary orbs or dignity scores, etc). Participants are expected to have previous experience of drawing up and interpreting astrological charts. See the chart below for an example of the format applied to charts throughout the course. Applicants should be able to see, just by looking at the chart, that the Moon is separating from a trine with the Sun and applying to a square with Mars (which perfects in 1°50'), and that it is placed within 1° of the 9th house cusp. It should also be understood that Venus is cadent but in its own sign of dignity, and that if Venus were placed in Aries it would be in its sign of detriment. (Anyone not able to confidently follow that level of astrological narrative is recommended to gain more experience before undertaking this study of horary astrology.)
  • Students can be removed from the course at the discretion of the administrator or the STA board if anything about their behaviour on the course, or their public conduct off the course is deemed disrespectful to other astrologers or brings disrespect to the study of astrology.
