STA Practitioner's Level Online Horary Course - commences 16 February 2019

Online Horary Course

The STA’s uniquely structured horary course is suitable for any astrologer with a secure understanding of basic astrological principles and some experience of drawing up and interpreting charts. Previous experience in horary is not necessary - the course provides a full theoretical overview of the subject and highlights the most useful and reliable principles of judgement. In addition to showing how to most-effectively draw out the meaning of a chart, it also focusses on preparing astrologers for the sensitive issues that arise within the horary consultation process.

The course offers a practitioners level of certification, and by the end of the course any astrologer who is already capable of offering a professional astrology service will be ready to begin offering horary to clients. The course is also a requisite qualification for anyone wishing to undertake the advanced level of study and tutorial mentorship offered in the STA Master's Level Horary Course.

The course material, written by Deborah Houlding, explores the methodology, theory, history and practical application of horary technique. It places a strong emphasis on learning through typical client-scenarios, with consideration also given to informative historical examples. Although traditional techniques lie at the heart of the study, the course is geared towards the consulting needs of the modern horary astrologer and a wide range of typical (and unusual) horary queries are covered (including lost items/missing pets and people, relationships/emotional dilemmas, property/career/financial concerns).

Students are guided towards developing refined focus, and taught the most efficient way to extract the pertinent details of the astrological symbolism. Each lesson allows the opportunity to explore and consolidate what is being taught through a selection of various chart examples, and the course is designed to offer an accumulated knowledge of traditional doctrines in a balanced way, so that theoretical principles enlighten and facilitate (rather than overwhelm) the creative aspect of horary interpretation.

This course offers the STA Practitioners Level Horary Course in a format that has been specially adapted for online delivery.

20 lessons are delivered on a weekly basis over a period of 10 weeks, through a combination of supplied course notes, modern media presentations, and online tutorials. Students study at their own pace and within their own time, but always with supplementary group discussion and access to their tutors.

A typical session will include: a live presentation, reading, an individual assignment (e.g., chart examples or workbook activities) and an assignment which encourages group interaction (e.g., forum discussion). Each week one of the four tutors will guide that week's course content, review student assignments, give personalized feedback and be available for questions and guidance.

(Following completion of the course, graduates receive access to the STA GRADS Facebook page, where STA tutors join with past graduates to engage in private discussion of particular points or complexities that arise in client charts. The page is used as a means for the STA to offer ongoing support to any astrologer that has undertaken this course.)

The available places on this course are limited to 20 participants, to ensure that the study groups are friendly and supportive, with everyone able to receive a great deal of personal attention.

The course content (subject to amendment) includes:
  • Introduction to horary astrology
  • House signification in horary

Dates and times:

Our sessions are delivered twice a week. We have designed our course schedule to enable most students throughout the global community to attend many of the live, interactive deliveries of the course material, with the knowledge that few students will find it convenient to attend every class. It is not essential that the live sessions are attended as each of them are recorded and made available for later access and review. We do recommend that each student aims to attend a minimum of six of the twenty live deliveries, as this is the ideal platform for asking questions as they arise. This course also provides an active forum for group discussion, which has proven to be a great meeting point for all students in further exploration of course material, irrespective of location and ability to attend live sessions. No student will miss the opportunity to have their questions raised and addressed in a timely manner by one of our four course tutors.

Please note that all course times are given in GMT. Students are responsible for converting advertised GMT course times to their local time zone equivalent. The website offers a useful world clock which shows the time difference from GMT for all of the world’s major cities:

The course formally commences on Saturday, 16th February 2019 at 5:00pm GMT with a group tutorial that offers an overview of the content of the course (this is expected to take no more than one hour), followed by a live online delivery of Session One material.

Students are asked to join a similar online meeting on Saturdays at 5pm GMT and Tuesdays at 9am GMT to participate in live delivery of the course material, engage in a group chart discussion, and to explore any questions that may have arisen from previous material.

20 sessions will be spread over 10 weeks, each on a Saturday and Tuesday GMT. The course commences on Saturday, 16th February 2019, and the final session (including the distribution of certificates) will be held on Tuesday, 23rd April 2019.

Course policies, requirements and recommendations:

Participants should have a good understanding of general astrological principles, including planets, signs, houses, aspects and transits.

Chart calculation is not taught as part of this syllabus, except for techniques that are specific to horary astrology (such as planetary hours and the calculation of planetary dignity scores, etc). Participants will be expected to have had previous experience of drawing up and interpreting astrological charts before undertaking this study of horary.

The course is restricted to a small number of participants to allow plenty of individual attention. Therefore, places on this course are limited to a maximum of 25 students.

Students are required to download a free video conference program, Zoom, to enable interactive online sessions with the tutors and fellow students. It is also necessary to have stable internet access, as all coursework will be done online through the STA Course Portal.

The course materials should be accessible on all modern computers (Windows 7 or higher is recommended for Windows based PCs). For any kind of video conference, it is recommended that each participant have 1 Mbps upload, 4 Mbps download of available internet bandwidth. For optimum performance, we recommend using a broadband Internet connection. Poor network performance, lack of memory or high CPU usage may cause the audio quality to drop, become delayed or sound robotic. If you experience this, try closing all applications that are not being used to free up some additional bandwidth.

In the unlikely event that the course is cancelled or postponed, STA will refund any course fees and deposits but will not be liable for any other costs incurred by participants.

If a student pays for the course and then changes his or her mind for any reason, a cancellation will be arranged and refund of any particular payment is allowed within 30 days of that payment. No refunds are allowed after this 30-day 'cooling-off' period or after the delivery of course materials has commenced.

The cost of this course, which includes all online classes, course notes and qualifying certificate is £425.
Places are limited to 20 participants, secured on a first-come basis upon payment of a £175 deposit. The remainder of the course fees must be paid in full by 1 February 2019.

Payment can be made by bank transfer, sterling cheque drawn on a British bank, or via credit or debit card through PayPal. For the latter, please use our online booking form.

Enrolments can be made through our our online booking form.
